Open Mic Rules/Guidelines
For Musicians:

First, come sign up: You play in the order you sign in. You must be present to sign up, no online reservations. You can leave and come back, but if you are not present and ready and it is your turn, you will be pushed to the bottom of the list. You can write yourself in any time after 6pm. There is no limit to how many people can sign up. All acts will be announced, who is on deck and who is up. Sign up ends at 10:45pm. We will do our best to get through everyone before bar close. If we do not get enough musicians to last until 11pm, then we will start a new list. If you play as a group (groups get more time), you cannot sign yourself in later as a solo act unless we are short on musicians and we have gotten through everyone. This does not apply to musicians who want to step in and assist a solo artist for a few songs, or if a solo artists who only sings and requests a musician to back them up.

Time Limit: There will be a countdown timer visible to you. Solo musicians get 12 minutes. Most pop songs are around 3min. long so you should have no problem fitting in 3 songs in your time frame. You can still play a bit longer than 12 minutes as long as you start your last song before the counter is down to 2 minutes. However, feel free to play as many short songs as you want within your time frame.
Groups (Bands) of two or more have more people so they get 15 min limit. (If a solo act is assisted by a backup artists, that does not count as a group)

Instruments: Bring your own. I will have a guitar and other things available for use but you are encouraged to bring your own. Please no drum sets or amplifiers. I will have a small guitar amp and bass amp available if you need it. Keyboards and electric pianos are okay. No drum kits. Light percussion is okay like djembes and bongos, cajon, but they won’t be mic’ed. We will be close to a neighborhood and don’t want to be too loud. I should be able to control all levels from the soundboard. If you have prerecorded original music you want to plug into the PA and sing/rap, that’s okay, but please don’t do this with cover songs, it’s not karaoke time.

Tips: I will encourage everyone all night to tip you, buy you drinks or pizza etc. There will be a thing to put tips in for all musicians. If someone hands you a tip directly, put it in your pocket, it’s yours. At the end of the night I will distribute the tips evenly amongst each individual act. If you are in a group, each member will be tipped as one act. You must stay until the last act finishes to collect, no exceptions. I will only distribute tips to everyone if there is enough for each musician to get at least a dollar. If there is not enough, then the tips will go to the acts that travelled the farthest (Racine, Kenosha, Sheboygan, Madison etc.) Milwaukee, Oconomowoc, or Mukwonago does not count as “Far”. If everyone is tipped and there is a few dollars left over, then the extra goes to the farthest traveled acts.
Drink special, buy one get one for performers only

No Featured Artist: Don’t ask. I will probably get a special night for that sometime in the future.

Privacy: I do my best to take pictures and videos of everyone, but can’t get to everyone due to limited memory card space. If you do not want any pictures or videos of you posted on social networks, or anywhere else specifically, please let me know.

Open Mic Rules/Guidelines
For Spectators:

Shut up or move the back: Please keep the voice levels down low if you are up front. This is the artist time to shine, not yours, don’t interrupt them. They are not their to provide background music like a jukebox, but to intimately perform for you. I’ve played at bars where I couldn’t even hear myself sing, this is rude. If you are not leaning in for someone to hear you, you are probably talking too loud. If this is the case, you will be reminded to quiet down or move to the back.

Age Limit: 21 and up, unless you have a legal guardian with you. Billy D’s is an establishment that serves alcohol and food, but they only have a tavern license, not a restaurant license.

Be Respectful to the Performers: No heckling. We want the performers to feel comfortable. Please do not request songs that are not originals or covers you have not heard that artist do before. If you want to hear Lynyrd Skynyrd or Billy Joel, then go to your car and turn the radio on. If you are that passionate about attention, then please feel free to sign up so that you can have a turn to be heard.

Please Tip: If you like what you hear, then tip. We will have a vessel for inserting tips for all musicians. You can also tip musicians directly, buy them drinks or food etc. They are working to entertain you for next to nothing. The bar is not paying the entertainers to play so tips are important. They are working just as hard as the employees are at the bar. This is something they practice for everyday just to be appreciated. If you do no believe the performers are worthy of tips then you don’t have to listen, or you can sign up yourself. Even pocket change is welcome. Who ever said tipping pennies is disrespectful is not a musician. They are serving you music as if a waiter/waitress is serving food. Please Tip.
